Easter Bank Holiday – Modern Soul UK

E Shed Bristol 28 March

Filed under: Mike Ashley — lifeandsoul @ 5:47 pm

Eve has been running her Sho’Nuff nights at Eshed in Bristol for a while, championing her love of Northern Soul and 60’s music. Fortnightly on Tuesdays

She couldn’t do this week so I stepped in at short notice to help her out with Charlie (sickboy). Just grabbed me boxes and a pile of records, had no time to sort them, as this is not the regular thing for me, although I’ve grown up through it, and my preference these days is to champion new sounds. However a trip back to roots isn’t a bad thing. So this is what I played (pretty much everything I think, and not in order):-

Bobby McClure – Was it something I said
Johnny Angel – Stone out of your mind
Koffee Brown – After Party
Chuck Cissel – Do you believe
Chuckii Booker – Games
Cunnie Williams – Call Me
George Benson – The Ghetto/El Barrio
Niteflyte ft Jean Carn – If you believe
Sweetback – You will Rise (Bone Idol Mix)
Cornelius Bros & Sisters Rose – Big Time Lover
Four Tops – I just can’t get you off my mind
Ambelique – Talk like that
Innersection – I’m in debt to you
Jimmy Briscoe & Little Beavers – Movin On
Bobby Patterson – I’m in love with you
Jesse Boone & Astros – I got to love you
Voices of East Harlem – Wanted dead or alive
Dramatics – No rebate on love
Aretha Franklin – I can’t see myself losing you
Na Allen – I was telling her about you
Gene Redding – Once a fool
William Devaughn – Hold on to love
Wilton Felder – Inherit the Wind
Lenny Williams – Choosing you
Charen Cotton – A little bit of love
Esther Phillips – Home is where the heart is
Sharon Britt – Guess who I belong to
Ronnie McNeir – Wendy is gone

Met Chris Montebiano at his studio and was joined by Colleen Max Fisher. Had a good chat about her aims and direction, listened to several of the new mixes and remixes of her material as she is gearing up to Miami .

Then downtown to Fran Cathcarts Eastside Studios and spent the afternoon with Fran, Armand, She and Brandon put together tracks for the forthcoming album. In particular today they were focusing on the one ballad on the album, ballads being the most difficult to perfect.

In the evening I met with Dexter Myers, and we talked about t he party, thanked him for all his hard work, and that of his team Tasha & derrick particularly. we talked abouta whole heap of things. Later on we met up with Jeremiah and continued the discussion. Jeremiah has just signed a deal with an indie label and was very excited about his forthcoming album. Things look bright for these two.

Weekend

Filed under: Mike Ashley — lifeandsoul @ 11:47 pm

Spent most of the daytime doing ‘tourist’ things, the weather on Saturday was glorious, hit the 70’s, walking about, shopping, that kind of thing.

Sunday night checked out the Village Underground open mike night. I had been before but I don’t remember it being this packed, from early on. It was heaving. Features Ron Trent, Melanie Daniels who both in there own right are excellent and they make a real show of the event, use the audience and freestyle it. The band are superb and they pick up everyone’s requests on merely a whisper – no backing tracks here. The ‘acts’ are varied but are mostly all worth a listen. I went with Armand and She.

We didn’t stay till the end as wanted to check out Opus 22 in Chelsea run by DJ Evil D. Arrived there and met up with She’s man Brandon. Treated to a mixture of old school soul and hip hop, a great mix of music. The venue is frequented by a breakdance crew so it was entertaining as well.

Adam Falcon & Aaron Whitby

Steve Francis & Heather Park

Must say a big thank you to Dexter for his organisation, his crew and the staff at the Leela Lounge which proved to be a great venue. When I got there Dexter was finalising the ‘goody bags’ that he had prepared for everybody.

First one there was my girl Kellie Sae, she introduced me to Tyrone another singer. Kelli brought me up to speed with what she’s doing, always great to see Kelli.

I hadn’t seen the final guest list acceptances were but it was running into the sixties. In the end it was less than that (in the forties, I guess) but it was a great informal gathering. The ambiance of the place led itself well to conversation and it was a great opportunity to catch up and talk. I think everyone who came enjoyed it, I certainly did.

Who came? Try not to leave anyone out and in no particular order – Kelli Sae, Jowee, Heather Park, Joseph Diamond, She, Renee Neufville, Colleen Max Fisher, Dada Goldenchild, Martha Redbone, Shelley Nicole, Ed Jackson, Abby Dobson, Adam Falcon, Maya Azucena, Lasonya Gunter, DC Starbrite, Chandlar, JL Cotter, Dexter Myers, Gordon Chambers

Not to mention supporters and guests including Steve Francis, sara Hill (Sista Factory), Armand, Fiona Bloom, Nicole Valentine, Rob Southoff, Ish (Bondys), Aaron Whitby.

Day 4 Friday

Filed under: Mike Ashley — lifeandsoul @ 2:16 pm

First off Steve Wallace came to the hotel. We chatted for about 45 mins or so, some of which was recorded for an interview for the website. I was not familiar with his work but have subsequently listed to it and it really is good. Very interesting background, from Chicago, studied classically, performed opera, definitely a name to look out for.

We were then joined by MABILT Kregg Ajamu, Steve’s producer, bandleader of Rhythm Republi, and veteran of New York Funk Soul and Live music for 10 years. We chatted for ages, but unfortunately the recorded bit didn’t record!!!!, but a great guy, lots to say, lots of stories to tell. Focussing now on The Progressive Soul Muzik Tour which will feature Rhythm Republik Steve Wallace and a few other featured vocalists.

Also spoke to Lenora Jaye, his main vocalist on the phone. Also called back John Adams

Day 3 Thursday

Filed under: Mike Ashley — lifeandsoul @ 2:01 pm

Relatively quite day, few calls and connections with people for rest of stay, particularly Colleen Max Fisher and Jeremiah. Other than that spent the day shopping, still don’t know what to get for the children back home. Picked up a few CD’s, mostly mainstream that I had delayed getting until I got here, Mary J Blige (with the bonus track), Heather Headley (double disc with DVD on reverse), Trey Songz, Public Announcement, Lathun (Fortunate), plus one I didn’t know and is excellent Darondo’s let my People Go.

Rob picked me up at 8 and we headed for Negril, a bar in the Village, lounge style, Caribbean food, and pumping with mellow progressive hip hop beats.Rob was there to set up an interview for Meryl Carter, so I met her and her crew and several other of Rob’s acquaintances. The interview went well and may be syndicated to TV as well as magazines.

Meryl and her crew came with us to SOB’s to see the J Dilla tribute evening. The show was a mix of DJ’s, Rappers and singers held together, hosted and produced by Anu Sun. Most artists did about one number, and all in all it was a pretty good show. Most of the musicians were the same ones that backed Renee earlier in the week, but here under the guise of the Bohemian Chocolate Sextet and they had the versatility and expertise to back the whole show.

Artists included W.Ellington Felton, Selan, Real Live show, but the cameos for me were Renee Neufville, Chinahblac (who it was good to meet albeit briefly), and a surprise addition by Amp Fiddler. Bilal for me, I dunno, some of him I really like, when he’s in that zone it’s great but he just goes everywhere and I’m afraid I lose him.

It was a heartfelt, intimate tribute evening with some great stories about Dilla, RIP

day 2 wednesday

Filed under: Mike Ashley — lifeandsoul @ 2:38 am

Not much happened today. Had a look around, went Downtown, through the Village, and then as far as City Hall & Ground Zero.

Took a look at Bondy’s, didn’t see Ish, not much in there that I wasn’t familiar with and didin’t get anything. Checked a few more stores, had a listen to some stuff mostly mainstream, a few I need to get but didn’t today.

Spoke to Mabili, Rhythm Republic and a host of others. Arranged a meet for Friday, he will also bring Steve Wallace along.

Also spoke to Colleen Max Fisher, she will speak to her producer Chris Montebiano and arrange a meet at their studio.

More arrangements for Thursday & Friday made

New York Arrival

Filed under: Mike Ashley — lifeandsoul @ 9:19 pm

Arrived without any hitches, except that it had been a long day travelling including getting up at 2am UK time to drive to London Heathrow. Checked in and went for a stroll up to Times Square and back. I had been fighting off a cold for a few days so I decided that I would go to a Wholefood Market that I Knew a few blocks away, get a take out and just take it easy for the first night.

I was dozing, no nearly asleep catching glimpses of the girls on American idol. It wasn’t late about 8.30 US time but I had been up a long while.

At about 9.15 the phone rings, it was Rob Southoff, who had just gotten a call from Renee Neufville saying she was doing a show at 10pm. Luckily the Cutting Room was only about 5 blocks away so I met Rob there.

Woaw this turned out to be a night of several surprises. I hadn’t met Rob before although we had been in contact for a long while and indeed had planned to meet on Thursday. After the meet and greet more intros Nicole, who had asked Rob to film the show for Renee, and Jill Newman of Jill Newman Productions. With only a few minutes to go we were given a seat right at the front, and a quick intro to Renee.

The keyboard player looked familiar, I’m sure I had seen him before, still am in fact but I don’t know who with, but it was Bob Glasper (Blue Note Recording Artist). There was bass and drums, piano and Renee. Apparently they had only rehearsed the day before.

Next surprise on walks Gordon Chambers to do the intro, hadn’t seen him since last year, and a chat later on revealed that he is going to Philly this week for some production work and hopes to complete his next album maybe this fall. Also met Jowee (sp)

Well Renee’s show was a delight, pure organic soul with lots of jazz thrown in. It was casual, yet strong, intimate yet intense, and raw yet polished. It was a show that was a pleasure and a privilege to be at and witness.

Next surprise was a couple of cameos by none other than Roy Hargrave.

So all in all a wicked and unexpected night.

Had word from Eric Roberson that he’s in North Carolina, travelling back Friday but probably unable to make the party. Gordon is off to Philly and also may not be back, Na2 has a personal bereavement and can’t come, and neither can Jeremiah who has just signed a deal and will be in the studio. So regrettably there are a number of disappointments but hopefully it will come together.
