Soul Fusion News

Filed under: Independent Soul Music News — lifeandsoul @ 8:50 pm

Hi there, Just thought I’d drop you a line to let you know about a few developments regarding SOULFUSION. There’s lot going on in the background but for now I’d like to let you know a few things
I am very pleased to announce that with immediate effect HIPPO will be joining me as resident DJ in the Northern Soul room, Needless to say Hippo is very pleased about his appointment, and is looking forward to getting the Joint jumping on May 19th. This is great news for Soulfusion. Fans of the Hipster will no doubt be happy at his inclusion in the team.
I have also asked ADY POUNTAIN & STEVE LLOYD to join me as resident DJs in the Modern Soul Lounge. This will bring continuity to the event allowing the DJs to play lesser known tracks and to build up a list of regular sounds that will become SOULFUSION Anthems.
This is all good for the future of SOULFUSION and for the Gloucestershire Soul scene in general.
Room 3 continues under the banner of “Soulfreedom” with KEV BAYNHAM, MIKE ASHLEY & MIKE SHAWE playing Soulful Dance in their own Styles.
Last time this room really came into it’s own, and I am very pleased with the reaction it had with the Soulfusion faithful.
MAY19th is our next event which is only event number 7. I am pleased to say that the membership is increasing on a daily basis with the website having plenty of hits. Membership nearing 1100 members. thanks for your support.
HIPPO is headlinging in the Northern room assisted by MIKE VENN & all the usual reprobates (myself included).
The Modern Soul lounge will see a very special guest DJ Crazybeat’s GARY DENNIS playing a 2 hour set for the SOULFUSION Crowd.
Gary is travelling a long way to be with us so let’s show him just how the Soulfusion crowd know how to party.
I hope you will make the effort for this very special night. please remember if you want membership for friends then get in touch at least 48 hours before the 19th of May.
Untill then have a soulful few weeks
regards
Neil Self

UPDATED CONFIRMED SOUL-PATROL AWARD WINNERS: Jazz Trumpeter Ginetta’s Vendetta

As many of you are already aware, for the 2007 Soul-Patrol Convention this year we are partnering with the Philadelphia Black Heritage Festival and the Convention will be at Clark Park (map) and The Enterprise Center in Philadelphia from May 24 – May 27th. We are expecting 10,000 – 15,000 (or more) to attend the combined Soul-Patrol Convention & Black Heritage Festival. We have partnered with Black Heritage Festival because our objectives for the Soul-Patrol Convention and the Philadelphia Black Heritage Festival are 100 percent in lockstep with each other.

The entire convention/festival will be FREE with the exception of the Black Music Cabaret, thanks to the generosity of our 2007 sponsors.

THE OBJECTIVE:

To help facilitate the extension of OUR CULTURE into the future…

Click here to view the detailed agenda

We have formed this partnership because both organizations feel that we need to be more proactive helping to facilitate the expansion of authentic Black culture into the future. We feel that our children are currently being hoodwinked by the mass media and we want to provide positive activities to counteract the posion they are being fed about what Black culture is. We think this is a good way to help insure that Black culture actually has a future, that is derived from it’s past.

So if you are coming out, please do bring your children. There will be a host of activities such as Creativity Over Crime Workshops, Black Hist. Village & Workshops, Double Dutch Contest, African Storytellers, Native Dance Contest, African Drum Circle, Sidewalk Chalk Festival there beyond the music that specificly are desinged for children. And we want to get to the children “by any means nessecary”, via music or other activities.

We think that by directly exposing these younger people to “Great Black Music From The Ancient To The Future”, in all of it’s forms it will do much more than we ever could here on the internet to extend the music and the culture. And our sponsors concur.

Here is what we have on tap for this 3 day event:

- Black Music Film Festival (@ Enterprise Center former studios of the American Bandstand TV show)
- Black Music Awards Ceremony/Concert (@ Clark Park)
- Black Music Cabaret (@ Enterprise Center former studios of the American Bandstand TV show)
- Black Music/Culture Panel Discussions (@ Clark Park)
- Black Music Trade Show (@ Clark Park)
So far we have over 25 artists confirmed as attending and include some of the biggest names in the history of Black music as well as some of the most important artists on today’s progressive/independent music scene, so we will have many unforgettable & one of a kind live performances.

We also will have many authors, film makers, broadcasters and activists participating in various events at the convention. We are expecting over 15,000 to descend on Philadelphia from around the world to attend the combined Black Heritage Festival/Soul-Patrol Convention this year.

Hotel rooms are being booked quickly. If you are coming we have a block of rooms at the Philadelphia Airport Hilton for $108/night. Street address is 4509 Island Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19153, (215) 365-4150. You may be able to do better on your own, but that’s what we have.

Outdoor events are scheduled for historic Clark Park and indoor events (Cabaret & Film Festival) are scheduled for nearby The Enterprise Center (the former studios of the American Bandstand TV show).

Gordon Chambers – June 12th at London’s Jazz Cafe

Filed under: Independent Soul Music News — lifeandsoul @ 7:43 pm

Award-winning New York songwriter-artist Gordon Chambers decided to begin recording as a vocalist himself after a decade of writing hits for the likes of Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Brownstone, Patti Labelle, Angie Stone and the Isley Brothers.

His new album is unashamedly a collection of love stories “in the tradition of classic soul music of the Seventies but with a current feel”. Highlights include “To Love Again” with San Francisco soul star Ledisi, his own version of “If You Love Me”, the stand- out ballad “If It Wasn’t For Your Love” (previously recorded by US star Heather Headley, and much performed at weddings and anniversaries), and “Stay Together”, co-written by Eric Benet and originally recorded by the Temptations.

You can catch Gordon at London’s Jazz Cafe on June 12th. Contact the venue and usual ticket outlets for further details.
