Community gardens, casitas and improvised poetry are interconnected and are an important part of many cultural traditions. Thanks to all who came out to Carl Schurz Park Summer Sounds last month! We had an amazing crowd and were blessed with beautiful weather as we played our music in the breeze overlooking the East River. The park’s organization got lots of new memberships as well as a sponsor or two for their beautiful flower beds. If you didn’t get a chance to see us there please make it a point to visit this gorgeous cozy corner of Manhattan. You will love it! More news updates soon…

Thanks for reading and hope to see you for La Casita,

“Bright young saxophone talent – sounding somewhere between Stan Getz and Courtney Pine (minus the showboating chops) – Brown's music is an accessible mix of classic jazz tones with a twist of R&B and funk. Something of an unusual 'crossover' star in the making (she's not a singer for starters)”-- TIME OUT

This Summer is just flying – thought it would slow down but the heat continues. I hosted the Nu-Soul Series this past weekend over at Frank’s Lounge in Brooklyn. I love to host so please keep me in mind if you need a master of ceremonies to introduce your night and add to the atmosphere.

One of the artists performing was originally from Ethiopia and lives in D.C called Wayna. I really loved her songs, presence and very powerful words. Can’t wait to see more of her. She’s going places.

This week I’m at shows/events every night. Want to shout out my bloggers– they’re great. Dred Scott, Miz Metro, Elida from Dirty Fuzz and Kissey. They’re all incredible artists and contribute to my blog for the love and added exposure.

If anyone has any ideas, or comments or is interested in contributing to The Bloom Blog- let me know…

Also, if you need tech advice or strategy online and or any help with launching a blog or getting the optimum value- hit up Tony Z from Netmix. He’s amazing!

I met Vortex at SXSW this year outside an event with British MC Sway. I had heard Cerebral’s name for a while but we’d never met in person. Or if we had- it was years prior.

We stayed in touch and the next thing you know- as the world gets smaller— he’s been working with Kissey Asplund. So I decided that he needed to get over to NY and do a show….. The particular show I had in mind actually fell through but…..Managed to find him a slot performing Monday- July 28th at REHAB.

Vortex will be performing right at 7PM- special guests include Freshest Kids, Kissey A and others. Vortex has traveled all over the world and lived in Japan, Germany, San Antonio and now the Bay Area. He’s released a number of projects and collaborations.

He was busy over the weekend shooting a full on high level multi-camera/grips video featuring Kissey A. Can’t wait to see it. So please come support indie hip hop from Cali. Let’s give Cerebral Vortex a NY Hip Hop Welcome!

This Swedish/Caribbean sensation is everywhere! Well, everywhere in NY that is. She’s had a great run here over this past month….It’s not slowing down. Last week at Studio B despite the horrible downpour, and the rooftop shutting down- her birthday was lovely!

Her debut album ‘ Plethora’ on R2 Records is receiving serious accolades and her star is shining brightly. Come see what everyone is buzzing about.

Kissey Asplund is performing here this week. Let’s give her a huge send off and show her lots of love before she goes back to Sweden.

Monday at REHAB rocking with Cerebral Vortex. Tuesday at the fabulous Raw Fusion party at APT with Amon, Simbad, OP! and Scribe and…. Sol Village- hosted by Eric Roberson. SOB’s on Wednesday, July 30th.

British DJ Jaguar Skills hit NY by storm last week with 3 hot club gigs. Looks like he’ll be back in October for CMJ.

You can hear him on BBC1XTRA on Saturday night with Trevor Nelson. Also can download all his mix CD’s for FREE at Jaguar Skills.

And— Jag has been nominated for the best HIP HOP DJ at the DJ Awards this year! VOTE FOR HIM!!!! IT WOULD BE AMAZING TO WIN!!!! So – you gotta go here; DJ AWARDS And vote!!!! Tell all ya friends and get them to vote too!!!! Go on!!!!!! Voting closes on Sunday August 17

Treat yourself to a relaxing escape with like minds- It’s the 2nd Annual OWN YOUR POWER RETREAT. Announcing NEW DATES: Sept 26-27th at Miami Botanical Gardens

This retreat promises to be an empowering weekend. You will enjoy personal development, business and natural healing workshops designed to broaden your vision and bring clarity. A total integration of Body, Mind and Spirit. Don’t miss out…. Tables/booths selling out fast!!!! REGISTER NOW!!!

I got a lot of England in my life right now and this oh so makes me happy…My roots! All the way live from London is the funky soulful dance act- Reel People. Their 2nd album will see the light Stateside- as they ready the release of ‘Seven Ways to Wonder’.

Reel People spearheaded by Oli Lazurus of Papa Records fame… Oli will come over to NY for promo and guest DJ appearances sometime in September.

There are 12 juicy tracks on the latest project and a few guests including Darien and Omar… In fact– I can’t stop listening to this album..

Will be doing something special with them for International Soul Music Summit in Atlanta 2nd week of September. So keep your eyes peeled..

We can all be Rock Stars now- thanks to this new book coming out early August by author and long time friend Carrie Borzillo-Vrenna. CHERRY BOMB- Published by Simon and Schuster- Simon Spotlight Entertainment.

Carrie has rounded up some of her famous friends, favorite rock chicks, and cool experts to dish out advice, inspiration, and know-how in CHERRY BOMB: The Ultimate Guide to Becoming a Better Flirt, a Tougher Chick. and a Hotter Girlfriend, and to Living Life Like a Rock Star! CHERRY BOMB is an A-to-Z reference for everything awesome a girl needs to know, including the obvious (style, beauty, dating, and sex tips) and the not-so-obvious (how to prepare absinthe, how to sneak backstage, how to hit on a celebrity).

Save The Date: NY Book Party- Tuesday, August 19th- Beauty Bar- 7PM-10PM DJ CAT NYC on the decks. Mel D. Cole on the lens. Sponsored by Urban Decay, Effen Vodka, Alternative Press, Touchd, Emergen-C, Pleasure Chest, Zildjian, Capitol Records and Burning Angel.

Atlanta jazzy soulful and pleasing to the ear April Hill is working on her craft and gearing up for a few dates on the road. Her debut ‘ Love 360′ is generating a nice buzz at radio and press. It’s getting heated. Come see why.

April just rocked to a nice warm crowd in Birmingham this past weekend. Shouts to Laurence of Hot 107.7FM. She’s at The Blue Note on Friday, August 15th and then on August 20th at Fuzz Band’s weekly event in Norfolk.

I’m speaking this week at the Dynamic Producer conference. July 30th. This 3 day event runs from July 30-August 1st. I speak at 5PM this Wednesday at The Independence Day producer’s panel.

I’ve been asked to be a judge at the Independent Music Awards. Very exciting!

I’m on the panel with artists like Peter Gabriel, Roger Daltrey, Suzanne Vega, Ice T, DJ Skribble, MC Lars, and many other incredible artists and industry folks. This is an incredibly cool program that delivers a year of live & broadcast performance opportunities, as well as radio promotion, publicity, marketing and sales premiums that reach more than 15 million consumers, industry insiders, music journalists, film & tv music supervisors, etc., etc. The deadline to enter and be heard is Friday, August 1, 2008. You’ll find more details and entry forms at: Independent Music Awards

The IMAs puts your music in front of some of the most influential artists and industry professionals who determine the winners in the programs’ 54 album, song, design, website and music video categories.

Thanks again for supporting my events, artists and checking my blog and all my social media pages….I so do appreciate it. The Bloom Effect will be 2 years old in October!

I’m celebrating early- going back to Barbados!!

Sincerely,

Fiona Bloom

IN THIS MONTHS UPDATE WE BRING YOU NEWS OF A LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR AMP, AND FURTHER DETAILS ON AN EXCITING FORTHCOMING ALBUM PROJECT

Amp has been selected by a committee of five leading voices in soul music to receive the Heineken Independent Achiever Award this fall in Detroit. The award recognizes individuals in the music industry who possess the virtues of hustle, drive and the power to inspire others through their work in music.
A dinner will be held in Amp’s honor on August 5th in LA, and Amp will pick up the award in Detroit on September 4th.

THIS AUTUMN WILL SEE THE RELEASE OF A COLLABORATIVE ALBUM BETWEEN AMP AND JAMAICAN REGGAE LEGENDS SLY AND ROBBIE

A new series from the Strut label, Inspiration Information brings together current artists and producers with their musical heroes for a mouth-watering one-off collaboration.
“This is monumental for me” says Amp. “I discovered Sly & Robbie through their Compass Point productions with Wally Badarou, all the Grace Jones records, ‘Boops’ too. I loved the way they experimented with a more ambient direction.”
The album was recorded at Anchor Studios in Kingston, Jamaica during Amp’s recent trip there, and will be released in October.
The result is a confident, laid back set that brings a whole new twist to Amp’s trademark vocal style: Sly builds innovative digital and live rhythms, Robbie underpins the tracks with solid bass foundations and original generation guests “Sticky” Thompson (percussion) and Dalton Browne (guitar) add plenty of colour.
Amp will be over in Europe this Autumn to promote the album, before returning to Detroit to put the finishing touches to his next solo album, set for release in early 2009.
Keep checking Amp’s website and myspace page for exclusive previews of tracks from the album in the coming weeks.

WANNA BE A PART OF AMP’S STREET TEAM?
What with this upcoming album release, more touring and a solo release in the pipeline too, things are really stepping up at Amp HQ. We’ve had a fantastic response to the street team sign ups so far with a steady growing collective of people stretching from Auckland to Oslo and everywhere in between.
If you are interested in being part of this growing band of dedicated fans please drop us an email and let us know. Anything you can do to help spread Amp’s profile, from
online blog postings and event promo, helping give out stickers and flyers to your friends, holding Amp Fiddler listening parties, will all help to get Amp’s music to more ears!! In return for your help we’ll shower you with goodies; exclusive MP3s, free promos, signed posters, tickets to shows and more! You’ll also get the chance to meet and spend time with Amp and the crew next time he plays in your town.
If this interests you, please drop us an email at info@muthas.co.uk

Event Coverage: Strictly Social NYC

ssnyc

We came, we saw, we conquered. Nu-Soul Magazine, Soul Union and the Bloom Effect made history by bringing our Strictly Social monthly to NYC for a one-time event. We are happy to say that the night was a rousing success. Not only did we have close to 300 people show up on a Wednesday night but thevibe was just right, perfectly capturing the scene we have created in LA for a New York audience.

We also are getting lots of press and publicity for our hard work. Urb Magazine posted a story on their site. Click here to read

Event Coverage: Strictly Social LA w/ Jimi James & Rogiers

ss la

Strictly Social began a new chapter with the July 23rd show as the event moved to a new home at Los Angeles’ Little Temple Bar. The move proved to be a success with another pair of stellar performances. DJs Milky Wayne, Destroyer and Anthony Valadez (now of KCRW) set the mood for the night with their superb funk and soul selections as the crowd arrived. Yolanda Johnson, who was also showcasing her new jewelry line Beyoutiful by Pilar of Kreative Souls, was our gracious and hilarious hostess for the evening. Rogiers, in town from the East Coast, kicked off the night in style. He performed several tracks from his debut cd Life & Music: All of It, charming the audience with his silky smooth vocals and charisma. This was his first LA performance and we were proud to be able to make it happen.

Strictly Social has emerged as one of the Los Angeles soul scene’s most significant new monthly events thanks to a commitment to the concept of “Eclectic Soul Fusion.” Resident DJ and founder DJ Destroyer has been working diligently to fuse many styles of soul music into one cohesive night and with Strictly Social he has succeeded. Out of the desire to spread the Strictly Social sound even further, this first exclusive mix was born. The Strictly Social mix recreates the vibe found at the event itself by championing both established and new artists in genres such as neo-soul, progressive hip-hop, and soulful electronica. Acclaimed artists such as Jill Scott, Raheem DeVaughn, Eric Roberson, and Amp Fiddler share the spotlight with up and comers like Rogiers, Jon Bibbs, Jimi James, and Michelle Amador. Mixed live in one take, the Strictly Social mix will give you a taste of what this very special event is all about.

Nu-Soul bridges the gap between the world of R&B/soul and the underground vibes of electronica, the common factor being a grounding in funk, soul and urban lifestyle. This is a place where the sounds of neo-soul, drum and bass, deep house and breakbeat are a part of the same family. Through fascinating articles, engaging interviews, and the latest reviews, Nu-Soul hopes to open minds to the incredible array of soul influenced music available today.

Sincerely,
