Boston-based MC Mr. Lif has been bouncing off the walls, spreading the word far and wide about his thought-provoking, pertinent new escapade I Heard It Today. The new full-length, available now on iTunes and in stores everywhere via his own Bloodbot Tactical Enterprises imprint, sees the rhyme-schemer taking on these increasingly troubled times, turning political faux pas into prose with fierce vernacular and sharp delivery. Lif uses his platform to inform rather than gloat, to help empower and energize listeners towards meaningful civic action. His targets? A collapsed economy, a massive bailout bill, a housing crisis reaching far and wide, a troubled black community and the apathy, fear and angst that go with all of the above. I Heard It Today confirms Mr. Lif’s latest is, in every sense of the word, relevant. There are 2 videos off the album in the works. ‘The Sun‘ and ‘Collapse These Walls’. The rapper speaks without hesitation on the record’s 15 tracks, which feature guest spots from the likes of Bahamadia, Metro, Scanz and more. On this, his fifth overall LP, he blends a slew of established and up and coming producers such as Edan, Headnodic, J Zone, Willie Evans Jr., Batsauce, and Therapy. Miz Metro is sizzling- heating up– you’ll be hearing her name a ton- mark my word…I’ve heard most of the tunes off her debut album ‘UNLIMITED’ and it is a STUNNER!!! I’ve watched her evolve- started working with her developing her or mentoring her I should say since she was about 18…Now she’s 21 and finally ready! She’s been honing her craft- working on songs, structure- her stage presence, getting really comfortable playing out with her band The Makebelieves and she’s gearing up for the big big coming out. Very excited to be working with Entity Entertainment new series Project Art. Really cool multi-media installations with music and all the elements. Project Art has partnered with Hennessy Black in this series. It takes place at Climax Lounge featuring Lupe Fiasco’s recording artist Hey Champ on 1st and 15th Music. The 2nd and 3rd dates take place June and July TBA featuring artists: Miz Metro, Hollywood Holt, Brittany Bosco, Million $ Mano, Shala and more! Project Art raises awareness for the alternative art scene through Paintings, Graffiti, Photography and other mediums while all being intertwined with Live Music, Live DJ, Dance and Breakin. PA Chicago is a unique platform where artists can submit sculptures, paintings, pictures, 3-D Models, a video or modern art but make it beautiful, colorful, clever, amusing and outrageous. Innovation being KEY. The series kicks off May 22nd at Climax Lounge and powered by Hennessy Black, with additional support from Fiji Water, Vapors Magazine. Yelp, and Fusicology. I’m very proud and excited to be re-united with one of the very first artists I ever started working with all those years ago. Jazz Trumpeter Scotty Barnhart. Patience and persistence finally paying off as Scotty Barnhart’s debut album ‘ Say It Plain’ is finally coming out….May 19th…It’s absolutely STUNNINGLY GORGEOUS! Can’t say enough great words about this incredible project and I’m so proud and honored to be working and representing Scotty and this Masterpiece! ‘Say It Plain’ is released on Unity Music and distributed through Ryko Distribution. It features distinguished musicians Ellis Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Jamie Davis, Marcus Roberts, Clark Terry and others. The song with Clark Terry called “Pay Me My Money” is an anthem and I can see it being several theme songs for stations, music players, ring backs/video- you name it! ‘Say It Plain’ is a combination of standards and originals. Musicianship is top notch high caliber and I hope for ‘Best Jazz Album’ at The Grammy’s!!! You heard it here first! It’s a ton and just when you think you’ve mastered it- you realize you’re more overwhelmed than last year and it’s clearly impossible you’re able to get even 1/2 of the stuff you want accomplished… In other words…Don’t fret….Take a deep breath…However you take it in—-however you tackle SXSW- It is your own personal very own SXSW Experience and that’s the beauty of it. So if you end up seeing 30 great artists out of 2000 and attended 12 parties out of hundreds– You’ve done alright!!! It’s whatever you make it… With that said…..There seems to be tons of World Music this year which I’m excited about and a large overseas contingency…So I don’t feel bad I missed MIDEM this year….MIDEM folks are at SXSW….. Womex is all over SXSW this year too with a stage and panel…. I have to shout out super supporters of The Bloom Effect for this year’s SXSW. Fusicology, IMEEM, Soul Commune, Giant Step, Nu-Soul Magazine Also, my Severe 70 hottest buzz bands must sees! Published in Digital Media Wire. This is the 3rd year my hot list is published…. So check out what’s happening at SXSW. This will be my 20th or so year….Lost count really! SXSW SOUL So every year Urban at SXSW increases. There’s a few Soul/R&B acts this year on different showcases… One dedicated SXSW Soul showcase which mixes some of the best Soul and Hip Hop artists under one roof. Artists include: Wayna, Maya Azucena, Mojoe, Neckbone, Kendra Ross, Bavu Blakes ft Karma Stewart. Brett Koshkin of Waxploitation DJ’s holding it down on the decks… Wednesday, March 18th. Singer/Songerwriter Wayna gearing up for Texas….Her ‘ Higher Ground’ album continues to receive critical acclaim… She’ll be at SXSW SOUL- 10PM on Wednesday, March 18th…. Then off to Dallas – March 20th at the Bishop Arts Theater Center and then to DJ SUN’s hot Monday at THE FLAT in Houston- March 23rd… After Texas- Wayna hits WMC in Miami and performing at Giant Step’s party- Saturday, March 28th… She’s back in NY at Blue Note which will be a sold out show I’m sure….Friday, April 3rd- Late Night Groove Series…11:30PM…. Miz Metro has been busy performing, blogging, writing and crafting quirky pop songs and studying multi-media/social media for quite some time now… She’s super cool, super talented, artistic, innovative, funky, young and super smart….In other words- Miz Metro is a Rock Star or soon to be….You’ll see… Not only is she creating an exciting brand of her own vision/art but she’s also building community and helping create a movement of young budding stylish/artsy music types like herself along with fellow curator/programmer Crosby… Together- Crosby and Miz Metro have brought together this fabulous Hip Hop Howl Mixtape concept and will be showcasing this amazing mixtape line up at SXSW for the first time… Friday, March 20th….4:30-8PM. It’s free to get in and free food for first hour… Literally 25 + acts- the best of Indie Soul and Hip Hop coming together and showcasing in mixtape spirit– for the most part- 1 song each and a couple artists get a 2 song feature… This all goes down at Lucky Lounge — DJ Melo X on the decks mixing the entire event and bringing the tasties.. I’ll be in Austin but wanted to spread the word here. I’ve been a fan of Art For Progress for a few years now and supported their Cause. After all the great submissions they got in art across the board from around the world- Out of all the amazing finalists– winners will be chosen that night and awarded great prizes… Come see great art- witness a diverse array and spectacular views of the Hudson River. EOL TRIO

All the way from Paris, France- this progressive free form Jazz collaborative called EOL TRIO will be rocking in U.S making their debut in NY and at SXSW. They’re also performing tonight in Toronto at Canadian Music Week. EOL TRIO have a debut album called Mister K which mixes electronica fused with funky atonal jazz chords and improv. Made up of 2 brothers- Dennis Girard and Xavier Girard and Laurent David who also plays with Yael Naim. EOL Trio will be playing in NY on Tuesday, March 17th at DROM. 7PM LiveWired acts Ka’a Davis and M.Nahadr will also perform…. EOL TRIO go on around 8PM… DJ Lovolution on the decks with the musical treats. If you’re into improv, experimental, progressive and electronica- or if you’re a straight up jazz fan- I recommend you check them out….Who knows when they’ll be back as they’re touring requests overseas are very Extensive.

No stopping Wayna. She’s on a roll and the next few weeks is all about Grammy’s. She’s also performing at several inaugural balls/events in D.C Jan 17-20th… Her debut video ‘My Love’ is garnering a lot of praise/attention… Performing at SOB’s SOL VILLAGE- Feb 18th Wayna will be in LA during Grammy week doing promo, performances, after parties and anything else we can pursue. Hit me up if you have any ideas.. Save the date: The Blue Note- Friday, April 3rd…. So nominated for a Grammy in the Urban Alternative Performance category. This is pretty remarkable and pretty much unheard of for an indie artist…What a unique story! Go Wayna! ‘My Love’ will have a world premiere on BETJ’s Soul Session inside the TOP TEN. Locked down the first show of ’09 and so excited! Shouts to Adriel of Ill-Literacy and The Funky Pixel for hooking up the dope design. I’ve been wanting to bring Detroit crooner Monica Blaire for the longest and logistically it never worked until now and thus- her NY Debut…. The night is hosted by the fabulous and lovely Maya Azucena. This will be my first time seeing her in front of the mic not performing but giving some flavour to the night and verbal entertainment rather than vocal! Can’t wait. Also on the bill all the way live from Holland- Postman and one of my faves Kameron Corvet. The night is powered by Thisisrealmusic, ONUTSS, Fusicology and Rebel Soul. Speaking of Maya hosting Sound in Color- we’re very excited to participate at the premiere screening for Maya’s debut video off the new album called ‘ Get It Together’. DJ Center will be on the decks and there will also be a special intimate acoustic performance. Wednesday, Jan 28th at 7:30PM at MADIBA in Fort Greene and sponsored by Fort Greene Film Society and The Bloom Effect. The video is directed by Seth Kushner. So show some love! ‘Get It Together’- Maya will be happy you did!!!!

Heston’s ‘Storyteller’ has a Europe release in the Spring. It continues to do well in the States online/downloads and critically… He’s appearing on Soultalk Radio this Thursday at 10:30PM w/ Duane Simon so tune in… He’s at Blue Note Late Night Series- Saturday, January 31st. Midnight...

APRIL HILL

April Hill’s Remix Contest for ‘ The Search’ is well under way with over 150 submissions already from various DJ’s, producers around the world…. After extending the submissions deadline to December 31st we finally got all the tracks in and uploaded… There’s a big cash prize! Who’s going to be that lucky winner—- Well– the judges are sitting down(yes I’m included) this Friday at 5PM and we’re videotaping the entire event…. The decision will be made soon enough! April just collaborated with Italian soul/jazz/funk act Live Tropical Fish. Look for their release soon and a tour in Italy!! Dates From Hell

CLASH OF THE ARTISTS

I’m a big fan of Art for Progress. They have some great initiatives and they’re a not for profit. If you’re not hip to them- get to know them…They’ll be your best friend…. Art for Progress is committed to celebrating the arts, cultivating emerging artists, and developing a diverse, creative community with an on-line presence. They’re gearing up for Clash of the Artists- in its 3rd Year. Now in it’s third year plans on raising the standard of artist competitions across the world! At Art For Progress, they inspire exceptional international talent to get involved and support art education while having the opportunity to win fantastic prizes geared for the career artist. Here’s your opportunity to show the art world, peers, and fans your best work. The world will decide who makes it to the finals for the BIG EVENT in New York City in March 2009. The annual competition encompasses genres of visual art, film, fashion, live music, DJ’s, and the exciting open category, “creative”. The interactive judging process allows the on-line community to view short films, listen to music, and see the work of artists and designers from Australia to New York. Over a five-week voting period, three finalists will be chosen in each category. Deadline for submissions is this Friday…Jan 9th… No more submissions after this date and the voting begins on the 19th….. So I’m helping this crew out from CT and MA doing shows up there- They’re looking out for me too with Sound In Color. Came in at #18 in the Ent Category- Not bad… I’m going Top 5 next year!!! So I’ll be in LA…Can’t wait- I’m long overdue – Last time was there taking Anthony David around and now look where he is!!!
