Maurice’s Music Inspires High School Students in NYC and Istanbul
On December 16, high school students in NYC and Istanbul exchanged ideas via a live teleconference about the roles of freedom and structure in their lives and in the music of Maurice Brown, who performed live from Carnegie Hall.
Prior to the show, the students prepared by listening to and discussing a few of Maurice’s songs, some from his debut album Hip to Bop, and some from his new album coming out in 2009 entitled, Cycle of Love, which were recorded live at New Orleans Jazz Fest last summer. A select group of students prepared lyrics and choreography beforehand and were invited to come up to perform with the band. It was a truly special event for all!
This was the first of two concerts to be held as part of the Citi Global Encounters Cultural Exchange program. In April, the Maurice Brown Effect will travel to Istanbul to perform and talk with students as they continue to explore the music and ideas of structure and freedom throughout the year as part of their curriculum.
Laura Izibor’s buzz continues with abcNews recently naming her one of 2009’s breakout stars. Drawing comparison to Corinne Bailey Rae, abcNews said, “Laura has bit more of an edge. And she does a lot of a capella, so she’s definitely not afraid to bare it all.” Her hit single, From My Heart To Yours, can be heard on mainstream radio worldwide.
In 2009, the Laura Izibor band is gearing up to head out on tour to win over the rest of the world with their refreshing sound and contagious energy. Look for Laura in your city soon! To stay up-to-date with Laura, sign up for her eNewsletter and check out her MySpace page.
