“While Brown is by no means incapable of restraint, his busier solos were things to behold, chock-full of swooping, diving runs that managed to be completely melodic as well as startlingly virtuosic.”

– The Kansas City Star

“The size of his sound, the prowess of his technique and the dynamism of his stage personality always have attracted crowds.”

Maurice’s Music Inspires High School Students in NYC and Istanbul

On December 16, high school students in NYC and Istanbul exchanged ideas via a live teleconference about the roles of freedom and structure in their lives and in the music of Maurice Brown, who performed live from Carnegie Hall.

Prior to the show, the students prepared by listening to and discussing a few of Maurice’s songs, some from his debut album Hip to Bop, and some from his new album coming out in 2009 entitled, Cycle of Love, which were recorded live at New Orleans Jazz Fest last summer. A select group of students prepared lyrics and choreography beforehand and were invited to come up to perform with the band. It was a truly special event for all!

This was the first of two concerts to be held as part of the Citi Global Encounters Cultural Exchange program. In April, the Maurice Brown Effect will travel to Istanbul to perform and talk with students as they continue to explore the music and ideas of structure and freedom throughout the year as part of their curriculum.
