SXSW is drawing upon us and it’s always hectic getting all last minute details together on all the cool parties, shows you absolutely can’t miss, the artists I’m repping and trying to meet with folks I want to meet for new business and overall networking….Not to mention- all the great panels and roaming the exhibition booths….

It’s a ton and just when you think you’ve mastered it- you realize you’re more overwhelmed than last year and it’s clearly impossible you’re able to get even 1/2 of the stuff you want accomplished…

In other words…Don’t fret….Take a deep breath…However you take it in—-however you tackle SXSW- It is your own personal very own SXSW Experience and that’s the beauty of it. So if you end up seeing 30 great artists out of 2000 and attended 12 parties out of hundreds– You’ve done alright!!! It’s whatever you make it…

With that said…..There seems to be tons of World Music this year which I’m excited about and a large overseas contingency…So I don’t feel bad I missed MIDEM this year….MIDEM folks are at SXSW….. Womex is all over SXSW this year too with a stage and panel….

I have to shout out super supporters of The Bloom Effect for this year’s SXSW. Fusicology, IMEEM, Soul Commune, Giant Step, Nu-Soul Magazine

Also, my Severe 70 hottest buzz bands must sees! Published in Digital Media Wire. This is the 3rd year my hot list is published….

So check out what’s happening at SXSW. This will be my 20th or so year….Lost count really!

The 3rd Annual Urban Meet and Greet is going to be a great hang for all the Urban heads rolling through Austin.. It’s all about building/networking with great music….

With the rapid growth and accessibility of digital technology comes the chance for artists worldwide to get their message out and their music heard. They are not singing about girls and money, but about political strife, economic crises, and real life issues they face every day.
Join us on Friday March 20 to explore this phenomenon and how it is creating social change. This panel, moderated by Ben Herson, CEO of Nomadic Wax, will feature the women of the Muslim hip-hop/spoken word duo Poetic Pilgrimage – Sukina Abdul Noor and Muneera Rashida. Mark LeVine, author of Heavy Metal Islam, filmmaker Magee McIlvaine and myself will also offer insight.
Friday, March 20th….11am….
Should be an interesting discussion…. See you there!

Miz Metro has been busy performing, blogging, writing and crafting quirky pop songs and studying multi-media/social media for quite some time now…
She’s super cool, super talented, artistic, innovative, funky, young and super smart….In other words- Miz Metro is a Rock Star or soon to be….You’ll see…
Not only is she creating an exciting brand of her own vision/art but she’s also building community and helping create a movement of young budding stylish/artsy music types like herself along with fellow curator/programmer Crosby…
Together- Crosby and Miz Metro have brought together this fabulous Hip Hop Howl Mixtape concept and will be showcasing this amazing mixtape line up at SXSW for the first time…
Friday, March 20th….4:30-8PM. It’s free to get in and free food for first hour… Literally 25 + acts- the best of Indie Soul and Hip Hop coming together and showcasing in mixtape spirit– for the most part- 1 song each and a couple artists get a 2 song feature…
This all goes down at Lucky LoungeDJ Melo X on the decks mixing the entire event and bringing the tasties..
Please check The Bloom Blog for full line up!

I’ll be in Austin but wanted to spread the word here. I’ve been a fan of Art For Progress for a few years now and supported their Cause.
After all the great submissions they got in art across the board from around the world- Out of all the amazing finalists– winners will be chosen that night and awarded great prizes…
Come see great art- witness a diverse array and spectacular views of the Hudson River. Sponsored open bar and light food.
Saturday, March 14th 7:30PM 320 Studios.
Have to shout out Miz Metro in music who didn’t make the finals but she did get an honorable mention. Next year!

Soul heads are still raving at Sound In Color the other night at Joe’s Pub and Monica Blaire’s performance. Everywhere I turn- they keep talking about how amazing Monica was. How she blew everyone away with her dynamic and spectacular performance. Wow is the truth! She even received a standing ovation!!!!

This show was a long labour of love- passion, sweat and tears went into making this happen and Monica and I had been talking for almost 2 years trying to get her to NY and it finally happened!!! Thanks to Drake from Urban-Organic who flew in from Detroit. It was his festival in 2007 where I first discovered Monica Blaire!

This week is nuts- events back to back and workshops and then it’s off to sunshine and glamour during the fab week of Grammy’s. I can’t wait!

Shouts to Kissey Asplund, Miz Metro, & Dred Scott

OMG- please check the blog on Sound In Color...Everyone tore it up- the energy, vibe and talent was insane. Probably one of hottest intimate shows I’ve done. The Bloom Blog

I’m going to start launching monthly blog contests. I know I’ve been talking about it so it’s about putting into action…Just wait!!!l launching with Eb Did It Gift Baskets.

She’s also at SOL VILLAGE– Wednesday, Feb 18th… The Blue Note- Friday, April 3rd….

ve been hearing about this talented singer/songwriter a few years now. Anjulie is starting to garner heat and a nice buzz. Black Smith has signed her to management and it looks like Hear Music has picked her up for her debut full length sometime late Spring. Hot!

Anjulie has teamed up with Jon Levine of Philosopher Kings and he’s produced the addictive ‘Boom’ which is getting tons of plays on her myspace and elsewhere.
Grew up in Toronto- Anjulie has a very eclectic mix of sounds/styles and she’s open to even more growth in musical sensibilities. She’s showcasing in LA where she resides currently at Teddy’s in the Roosevelt Hotel this Wednesday, Jan 28th….
Show begins at 10PM To RSVP do so at Blacksmith

Maya killed it the other night as a host! She was wonderful….I can’t wait to see her hold down more hosting duties….Oh- I still want to equally see her perform but just had to acknowledge her passion and entertaining quality!!

Tomorrow is the night we’ve been waiting for to see the screen premiere of her latest video ‘ Get It Together’. It’s such a beautiful video- Please come out and support all her hustle and fruitful work/talent….

Got to love Les Nubians– they’re doing some innovative things. They just performed on a few inauguration events in D.C this past few days.
We’ve seen Les Nubian’s Echos: Nubian Voyager which performed at Joe’s Pub as part of I Kiffe NY.
Now- we have a chance to see this wonderful production from Celia. Her French Cabaret and EPK Recording. Paris at Night! Cabaret!

The show is an unconventional mélange of ingenious originals and innovative renditions of Edith Piaf, Nina Simone, Josephine Baker, Miriam Makeba, Dave Brubeck ~ an exhilarating soundtrack to her bi-lingual narrative of her love triangle with Africa, Paris and New York City.

Stay tuned for where the Big Event will be in March 2009 and you can be sure that The Bloom Effect will be highly visible and participating….

Beautiful concept, great art installation project. Have to shout out Moni and Michael Vargas for doing their thing and being creative and innovative and furthermore- a labour of love and from the heart. Friends We Love!

I remember when Moni first told me about her idea and dream- this was a short few months ago and look where they are. Moni released a Friends We Love CD in Japan that’s selling like hot cakes and they’ve had several installation viewings/screenings of several of their produced videos.

Now, they’ve taken it a step further and having a fundraiser in order to bring Friends We Love across the pond, to different Cities and looking to shoot and create content around the Globe to keep it interesting and continue their innovation.

Definitely a great cause to get down with so you definitely want to show your support. Benefit/Fundraiser at Sly Art vs. Robot City Loft on Friday, Jan 30th.

Friends We Love Art and Music Festival featuring: Waajeed, Bobbito, Jose James, Sarah White, Probe DMS and others. Going to be a splendid event. $20.00 suggested donation. 7PM start time…

So it looks like I have a date after all Feb 14th- Valentine’s Day….A date to host this fabulous event that I’ve been down with from the creation…

Purpose Records and Edclectic Entertainment hand pick some of the best up and coming world soul artists around… The talent is always creme de creme! In fact- I discovered Wayna back at this series last Summer.

Les Clarke and I usually hold it down on the mic….This time there are 2 editions for Feb so Les is doing Feb 12th at Frank’s Lounge and I’m Saturday, Feb 14th featuring Rogiers and Jon Bibbs…..Jon Bibbs is awesome! I always seem to miss his performances so now I’ll be able to see him in the mix!

Valentine’s Day is a weird celebration. Beautiful if you have your significant other and SUCKS if you don’t so this time- All of you will be my Valentine’s!!!!

So 2009 is spinning- I’m in the best frame of mind I’ve ever been in regarding my career and company and how I’m positioning myself in the social media space and mobile platforms and working on learning/absorbing as much information in those areas as I can so I can become an expert….

Now it’s time to get serious and to business and to building, creating and innovating and to connect with people and be kind to each other!!!

I swear- if it doesn’t happen in 2009– I am throwing in the towel!!! In other words- IT HAS TO!!!!!! I am at The Grammy’s…..I’ll be in warm weather at the most meaningful awards show in the entire music industry…. What can I say? I’m arriving both to LA and in LIFE!!!!!

I have so many friends in LA I can’t wait to see you all!!!

I’m working on another edition of SXSW SOUL! Look out!

Follow me on Twitter, be my Fan on Facebook and now that I have my new FLIP MINO which I adore- I’ll be building out both KYTE and YOUTUBE!!! See me online in cyber space and I’m about to get my SHORT CODE for texting!!!

Top 10 Albums of 2008 – Editor’s Picks
As 2008 comes to a close it is time to take a look back at those moments that made the year so special. There were plenty of great albums that came though our office in 2008 but alas there can only be 10 on this list (so sorry if you didn’t make it. don’t send hate mail). Contrary to what many may think Nu-Soul is not simply about soul music or the neo-soul and R&B world but the soul music diaspora and we really pride ourselves on bringing to light the talents of underexposed or unknown artists.

The following list does not reflect the opinions of everyone at the company but simply those of Norman Mayers, our editor in chief. Out of hundreds of CDs that came across his desk in 2008, these 10 discs created the biggest impact. Feel free to take a listen to the sample tracks to get a taste of the sounds and then download or order the album for yourself or for a Holiday gift. Every album on this list is a solid listen!

Nu-Soul bridges the gap between the world of R&B/soul and the underground vibes of electronica, the common factor being a grounding in funk, soul and urban lifestyle. This is a place where the sounds of neo-soul, drum and bass, deep house and breakbeat are a part of the same family. Through fascinating articles, engaging interviews, and the latest reviews, Nu-Soul hopes to open minds to the incredible array of soul influenced music available today.

Is it 2009 yet? Did I tell you I can’t wait to see 2008 behind me. I think we can all attest to that…. It seems like everyone I know is headed to D.C for the inauguration. I’m going to have to make plans to be there too….

So does everyone have their Turkey’s in order. How about the stuffing? I have just noticed a spike in Thailand and Czech Republic. I have no idea why or what’s going on in Bloom Effect land over there but it is very interesting…

Saw Maxwell over the weekend. Was phenomenal. So glad to see him back on top. Made me realize how much I really missed him. His performance was stellar. Women and men were besides themselves…. His musicians were as funky as ever and Maxwell’s moves surpassed my most sensual fantasies…Wow….

Today I visited Felicia Palmer at the SOHH Online Hip Hop Awards taping… That will broadcast over the internet next Monday. It brought back memories as I did the Voice Over for the online awards in 2000…

Let’s see what else…. Things wind down and folks can actually relax a little the next couple days…..

Lots coming up for December including holiday parties and events.. So stay tuned and locked into The Bloom Effect for your source to the hotness!

Singer/songwriter/instrumentalist/producer Heston is really starting to gain momentum for this long awaited debut that’s out now called ‘ Storyteller’. If you haven’t heard it yet- I suggest you pick up a copy from Soultracks, Amazon, ITunes, and any of the online retailers…

Heston will have a much wider release in ’09 and will be released on a label(TBD) in Europe too… If you’re by a TV this evening…Tune in to BETJ’s Virtual Awards....Airs at 8PM…. Heston is up for ‘Best Underground Artist’.

He’s at Center Stage in Atlanta- December 5th. Dec 6th at Sol Lounge in St. Louis and at The Blue Note on Friday, Jan 31st– The Late Night Series….

Keep your eyes peeled to Heston….He’s going places for real…… He was just featured on Michael Baisden’s show last Friday…

Checking out Raw Fusion tonight….Scribe’s be on me for ages about coming through- can’t let him or OP down…..Excited tonight as Zaki Ibrahim is performing…

Wednesday I suggest going to see Los Amigos Invisibles at Irving Plaza… Friday- Slick Rick at Highline Ballroom….

I will start featuring interviews and tidbits you’ll only read on my blog so stay tuned and keep reading…

Shouts to Kissey Asplund, Miz Metro, Dred Scott and Elida from Dirty Fuzz. I’m looking for more contributors….Hit me up if interested….

I’m getting tons of traffic on the blog so thanks for spreading the love…Bookmark it. Keep coming…. The Bloom Blog.

Hopefully by now you’ve all heard Wayna’s name somewhere. She has 2 great albums out. The first called ‘Moments of Clarity’ and the sophomore release just out called ‘Higher Ground’. Her first single off ‘Higher Ground’ called ‘My Love’ has been climbing up the Billboard singles chart and peaked at #2 on the R&B/Hip Hop….

Her ‘My Love’ video just screened in Baltimore at Maxwell’s after party….He and Wayna had a nice chat and we got photos….You’ll see them shortly…

She’s on the way to S.Africa now for meetings and then to Ethiopia for a big music festival….. She’s in Norfolk w/ Fuzz Band on Jan 14th.. Save the date: The Blue Note- Friday, April 3rd….

You’ll be seeing ‘My Love’ video on all the outlets and heavily online soon as well as features/interviews….
